“Tokyo, After Hours — A Day with Shun in Yoyogi-Uehara”

— Shun, 41. Consultant. Lives in a renovated flat in Yoyogi-Uehara. Drinks black coffee and buys wine by the case.

06:15 AM — Silence and Espresso

Shun wakes before the alarm. Always does.
In Yoyogi-Uehara, the mornings are quiet in a way that feels intentional—like the city holds its breath until you’re ready.

He grinds beans by hand and makes a single espresso. His kitchen is small but sharp: matte grey surfaces, a well-used Dutch oven, one perfect knife.

He scrolls news in English, checks the Nikkei in Japanese, and replies to a client in Singapore.
At 6:30, he waters the plant on his balcony. He doesn’t name it, but he does talk to it.

08:00 AM — Commute, Curated

Shun doesn’t take the Chiyoda Line at rush hour. He won’t.
Instead, he walks 18 minutes to Yoyogi Station, stopping by a bakery that makes sourdough that reminds him of Copenhagen.

People sometimes assume consultants live in Roppongi. He prefers places where the baristas remember your name, not your status.

12:30 PM — Lunch, Alone by Choice

He eats lunch solo at a quiet French café tucked between two office towers.
No noise, no meetings, no questions about his weekend. Just a good lentil soup and Bach playing softly.

Shun isn’t antisocial. He just likes time that isn’t performative.

19:00 PM — Good Wine, Loose Ties

He returns to Yoyogi-Uehara just as the sun dips behind low-rise rooftops.
On Fridays, he stops by a small wine shop run by a woman who used to be a translator. They talk about Rhône Valley blends and late bloomers.

Tonight he chooses a white he can’t pronounce and carries it home in a linen bag.

21:00 PM — Emails, Jazz, and the Long View

Back in his living room—walnut shelves, too many books, a single Eames chair—Shun answers emails.
He listens to Chet Baker. Sometimes Bill Evans.

He could have stayed at the office. But why would he?
Tokyo doesn’t owe you meaning—you have to carve it out for yourself.

Your Turn

Want to feel what Shun feels?
Wake before the city.
Choose quiet over status.
Learn the difference between loneliness and solitude.

This isn’t Tokyo in headlines.
This is Tokyo, after hours.
